STCW Basic Courses

STCW Basic Courses are for everyone working in the maritime sector. The STCW Basic Safety Training is the basic course that is mandatory for everyone working on a vessel or ship. This course consists of various disciplines regarding basic safety on board, such as personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, first aid, personal safety and social responsibilities. Besides this basic course, there are some other basic courses that are mandatory for personnel with a specific task, such as advanced fire fighting, proficiency in survival craft, proficiency in fast rescue, and security awareness.

What is STCW?

The regulatory framework STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) is created by the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) to guarantee high quality training and global and uniform regulations to ensure health and safety of all employees on board a ship. Therefore, responsible training is of great importance. STCW is globally, effectively and universally approved and implemented. The IMO sets the global standard for training, quality, health and safety in the maritime industry.

The first convention of the STCW regulatory framework was drawn in 1978 to apply one main international standard for the industry, including certification and superfiction of seafarers. This convection has been updated a few times, due to developments in the field of international law, security and technology.

STCW Basic Courses at FMTC Safety

Even though the STCW convention is drafted internationally, individual authorities are responsible for monitoring and supervision. These authorities need to certify maritime training providers to offer seafarer courses. For this the STCW conviction is translated into guidelines and regulations for maritime courses. FMTC Safety is ILT (ministry of Infrastructure, Living environment and Transportation) certified and is therefore allowed to offer maritime and seafarer courses.

FMTC Safety offers a wide range of STCW Basic Courses at their worldwide training locations. Among these courses are mandatory and optional courses. The certificates of these courses have a limited validity. When the certificate is about to expire, a refresher course needs to be done. If you need to do more than one STCW course or refresher course, have a look at our STCW Combination Courses. Both basic and refresher courses can be combined in STCW Basic Combination Courses and STCW Combination Refresher Courses.
